- RAID-II: A High-Bandwidth Network File Server
The RAID (Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks) group at U. C. Berkeley built a prototype disk array called RAID-I. The bandwidth delivered to clients by RAID-I was severely limited by the memory system bandwidth of the disk array's host workstation. The authors designed the second prototype, RAID-II, to deliver more of the disk array bandwidth to file server clients. A custom-built crossbar memory system called the XBUS board connects the disks directly to the high-speed network, allowing data for large requests to bypass the server workstation. RAID-II runs Log-Structured File System (LFS) software to optimize performance for bandwidth-intensive applications.- Compaq Proliant 3000 Server Laptop Cd/Dvd drives sound/vga cards, memory, etc (Fishponds, Price: 45)

Micron customers have been testing samples of 16 gigabyte DDR2 server memory modules, which the company claims is the "world's densest server memory module." Built on Micron's 78 nm process and using its TwinDie stacking tech, the module has 72 2-gigabit memory chips combined into 36 4-gigabit components. -- IDC research expects mid-range servers to sport 38 GB by the end of 2006, so there should be plenty of call for larger memory chips. Though these memory modules are designed for use in servers, the advantages of high-speed data access and high-capacity data-handling have traditionally made these chips desirable to Geeks, and then "normal" users in standard PCs and notebooks. Thus, Micron knows the market for its latest product will be a large one. -- Micron expects to have the chips on the commercial market by the end of the year. -- Read more from the [Micron press release] and [InfoWorld].- News: Microsoft fixes memory bug in security patch
Microsoft has fixed a bug in a critical security patch that may have been causing problems for some Windows Server 2003 users. The bug is in the critical MS06-040 Windows Server services update, released earlier in August. It affects programs that use up very large chunks of memory on some versions of Windows. According to Microsoft, programs such as Microsoft Navision 3.7, which require allocations of more than 1G byte of memory, can crash after the update is installed. Most Windows systems do not experience the bug, but Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and the 64-bit version of Windows XP Professional Edition are affected. Microsoft's hotfix for the problem can be downloaded from their site.- .NET application memory usage leads to IIS restart... (2 replies, VIP)
Hi, We have developed a .net application (website) which is running in windows 2003 server. Hits to this site is more. Say for example when firsttime the IIS restarted in morning, the memory status(Task Manager) starts with 230MB. But the same day evening or next day evening it reaches to 1.2 GB. After this stage we request for a .net page and it returns "system.out of memory error". But the same ...- .NET application memory usage leads to IIS restart... (2 replies, VIP)
