- System and method for optimizing interconnections of components in a multichip memory module
An apparatus and method couples memory devices in a memory module to a memory hub on the module such that signals traveling from the hub to the devices have approximately the same propagation time regardless of which device is involved. Specifically, the devices are arranged around the hub in pairs,...- Structure of memory traces of words presented in poetry and prose contexts
Two lists of target words couched within the contexts of poetry or prose were presented to subjects. Performance on a cued recall test was analyzed by traditional statistical tests and by the "reduction method" proposed by Tulving and Watkins (1975). Using this method, memory trace structure was described in terms of proportions of trace elements identified by analysis of the effectiveness of associative and rhyme cues. Results provided limited support for poets' assertions regarding the inseparability of sound from meaning in poetry. Contrary to prediction, however, a poetry encoding context diminished rather than enhanced the efficacy of the rhyme cue in list 1. An attention hypothesis is suggested to account for the findings, and implications for the feature theory of memory traces are discussed.- The Long and the Short of It: Relational Memory Impairments in Amnesia, Even at Short Lags
Journal of NeuroscienceClassic studies of amnesia led to characterizations of hippocampal function emphasizing involvement in long-term memory rather than short-term (or working) memory. In two experiments, we show that when memory for relations among co-occurring items is tested, hippocampal amnesia results in a deficit even at very short lags- A Day in the Life of an Information Security Investigator: In Memory: 9/11 Photos - Unpublished
I was sitting here this morning enjoying my coffee and typing a wonderful memorandum on September 11, 2001. It was really good, actually. I then remembered that a few months ago, a reader (who has asked not to have their name mentioned) sent me some pictures. I remember seeing these pics mentioned on Digg, and after doing some quick searching it looks like they were originally published on zombietime.com.- Method of manufacturing semiconductor memory having capacitor of high aspect ratio to prevent deterioration in insulating characteristics
A method of manufacturing a semiconductor memory according to the present invention includes steps of forming an insulating film, into which a conductive plug connected to a source or a drain in a transistor in a memory cell region and into which a first conductive layer which will become a...- Use of an implicit egocentric encoding strategy in memory for picture orientation
This experiment tested the use of egocentric and contextual cues in memory for picture orientation. College students were asked to verbally encode orientation of asymmetrical scenic pictures in either an egocentric or contextual cue condition. Subjects' memory for orientation of a prominent foreground object in each slide was tested both verbally and visually. Results showed contextual encoding impaired recognition memory for orientation, but not verbal recall of left/right information, supporting an hypothesized egocentric encoding strategy in which picture orientation is implicitly encoded and recalled in terms of a "left" and "right" reference to one's own body position. The idea that spatial orientation may be a "veiled control" process in which encoding is composed of both effortful and automatic components as described by Shiffrin and Schneider (1977) was also supported.- Memory for orientation of non-verbal material in normal and reading-disabled subjects
This was an investigation of the nature of spatial memory deficits in reading-disabled high school students. The specific focus was on long-term memory for left-right orientation of complex, non-verbal stimuli in disabled versus normal readers. The subjects performed two tasks: in one task, they viewed pictures of highly familiar settings and judged whether these pictures were correct or reversed in orientation; in a second task, they first viewed a set of non-familiar scenic pictures and subsequently were tested on the orientation of these pictures. The results of both tasks showed that disabled readers were inferior to normal readers in their memory for the left-right orientation. In that verbalization of the words "left" and "right" was not required in either task, the findings supported a long-term spatial memory deficit, as opposed to a verbal coding deficit in reading-disabled subjects.
